COF ACADEMIC POLICY

Students who cross-register for courses at another Colleges of the Fenway institution are expected to follow the academic policies of the host institution. See the Academic Calendar for the add/drop and withdrawal deadlines. Cross-registering students can get permission from their home institutions' residence life office for early arrival/late departures if there is a conflict between the two institutions' schedules.

Note: Several of the colleges have their course catalogues on-line. For more information, course descriptions, and prerequisite information, visit their web sites (click on logos below). Course catalogues also are available in the registrar's office at each college. However, not all courses listed are open to cross-registration.

COURSE GRADING SYSTEM FOR THE COLLEGES OF THE FENWAY:

Course grades will be determined according to the guidelines of the host institution and the particular course syllabus, and reported to the home institution accordingly. Students who are enrolled in a cross-registered course during the final semester of their degree program may have their graduation clearance delayed in the event of late grade reporting by the host institution.

In regards to minus grades, the CAOs agreed to make sure that all faculty are aware of the different grading policies at each college. Cases where a faculty member assigns a grade which does not fall within the home college’s grading policy will be handled on a case-by-case basis. This may result in a grade discrepancy between the final grade posted at the home and host institutions and must be resolved among the faculty member, the student and the home college registrar.

Below is a statement of the grading system for each of the six colleges, as well as the appropriate committee that handles student academic appeals or grievances at each college.

Emmanuel: Academic Review Board
Letter grades range from A through F with D being the minimum passing grade. There are “+” grades for all letter grades except A; there are “-”grades for all grades except D.

If the student wishes to challenge a grade, the process is initiated by the student through an informal discussion with the faculty or administrative person involved; if not satisfied, then the student holds an informal discussion with the chairperson and then with the Academic Dean; if still not satisfied, the student submits a formal application to the Academic Review Board for a hearing with the opportunity for full and fair participation.

MassArt: Vice President of Academic Affairs
Letter grades range from A through F. D is the minimum passing grade. There are “+” grades for all letter grades; there are “-” grades for all grades except C. H is designated as Honors; in the letter grade system, H is a designation higher than A.

The college has a dual grading system for the BFA program. All Foundation year courses are Pass/No Credit. After the first year, some departments give letter grades and other departments give Pass/No Credit, depending on which system, in the view of the faculty of each department, best serves the department’s goals.

MassArt students may not audit undergraduate day classes; faculty must award a grade for all enrolled students

If a student feels s/he was unfairly graded, the sequence of appeal is to first discuss the matter with the faculty member. If no satisfactory conclusion can be reached, the next step is a discussion with the department chairperson and finally the Vice President of Academic

Affairs. In questions of academic policy, the student should see the registrar and then, if necessary, the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

MCPHS: Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost
Letter grades range from A through F with D being the minimum passing grade. There are “+” grades for all letter grades except A and D; there are “-” grades for all grades except D.

A student has the right to institute a grade appeal procedure, which begins with the instructor and the departmental chairperson and, if necessary, proceeds to the School Dean.

Simmons: Administrative Board
Letter grades range from A through F with D- being the minimum passing grade. There are “+” grades for all letter grades except A; there are “-” grades for all letter grades.

Wentworth: Academic Appeals Committee
Letter grades range from A through F with D being the minimum passing grade. There are "+" grades for all letter grades except A; there are “-“ letter grades for all letter grades except “D.” Wentworth does not grant audit or pass/fail grades. Wentworth students may not use courses graded with Pass/Fail toward their graduation requirements.

Wheelock: Academic Appeals Board
Letter grades range from A through F with D- being the minimum passing grade. There are “+” grades for all letter grades except A; there are “-” grades for all letter grades.

CALENDAR:

Students are required to follow the academic calendar of the host college. If a conflict exists between calendars, it is the student’s responsibility to negotiate an acceptable resolution with the appropriate departments. Students can seek permission from their home institution’s residence life office for early arrival/late departures if there is a conflict between the institutions’ schedules. Students are strongly encouraged to notify their Residence Director early in the semester if this is necessary. Graduating seniors who intend to take a COF course during their final semester should be aware that this may affect their status at commencement, often due to a delay in grades. For example, MassArt grades will not be available until June. Seniors should consider this when cross registering and discuss it with their COF professor and/or advisor.

REGISTRATION DEADLINES:

COF cross registration deadlines differ from the individual registration

periods at each institution. Both students and faculty should review the deadlines on the COF Academic Calendar as well as the host institution’s website. Students assume responsibility for these deadlines when they enroll in a COF course. When considering these deadlines, be aware of the tuition refund policy of your home institution.
