Tips for advising

Here are some helpful tips about advising for study abroad

  1. Advise the student to start early. Study abroad takes careful planning and time to select the right program and adequately prepare to go abroad.
  2. Learn about programs at your college and throughout the COF. In addition, you can find information on programs by visiting our Programs-Led by COF Faculty/Staff site and reading program titles. Mention these opportunities to students during advising and in class.
  3. There are literally hundreds of programs offering semester, academic year-long, winter and summer study abroad opportunities. Students can enroll in these programs either through another college or through a third-party program provider. Most COF schools have set up a system for transferring credit. See Contact Us for a list of study abroad advisors at the COF schools.
  4. Federal and State Aid can be used for study abroad. There are also scholarship opportunities available.
