2nd Annual Turkey Trot a Huge Success

On November 17th, 2007, over 115 students, faculty, and staff took to Clemente Park to participate in the 2nd Annual Colleges of the Fenway Turkey Trot. The 5K Fun Run/Walk co-hosted by COF Intramurals, MCPHS Recreation and Wellness and a section of MCPHS’ First Year Seminar Community Service class, raised over 850 pounds of food for the Greater Boston Food Bank. The event was co-sponsored by Office Max, Cambridge 1, and O Water. After the event, participants and volunteers gathered at Cambridge 1, a local new restaurant in the Fenway area, for food, beverages and socializing.

The event was originally scheduled for November 3rd, however Hurricane Noel hit the East Coast and caused the event to be postponed by two weeks. Over 190 people originally signed up for the event, more than double the amount of entrants from 2006. Below are the top three finishers in the men’s and women’s division, with the top three finishers in each group receiving gift cards to Marathon Sports.

COF Performing Arts News

Do your New Year’s resolutions include “meet new people” or “join a performing ensemble”?  Consider the COF Theater Project, Dance Project, chorus or orchestra!  With the exception of the orchestra, no auditions are necessary, and there are no charges.  Just show up!

pic13 The new COF Theater Project, under the direction of Tom Davison, had its first performances in early December.  A series of five diverse, comedic one-acts were engagingly performed.  Time Flies, by David Ives, dramatized the brief, one-day lives of two mayflies.  Laura Martinville, Allan Knowles and Shannon Nolan captured the humorous, existential essence of the play. Theater rehearsals this spring are on Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m. in the Pozen Center at MassArt.

The COF Orchestra will present the first annual COF Concerto Competition:  orchestra members may compete for the honor of performing a concerto movement with the orchestra at the spring concert.  Other works by Mozart, Mussorgsky and John Williams will complete the program. If you are interested in joining, please contact performingarts@colleges-fenway.org to arrange an audition. Orchestra rehearsals take place this semester on Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. in the Ladd Room on the Brookline campus of Wheelock College.

Kristen Duffy Young returns from maternity leave to lead the COF Dance Project.  Due to popular demand, this semester there will be three 90 minute classes all rehearsing in the Emmanuel College Dance Studio.  Jazz will be offered at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Ballet will be offered at 6:00 p.m.  Participants are welcome to take both modern jazz and ballet.

pic14 Following an exciting presentation of Handel’s Messiah in December, this spring the COF Chorus will present a concert of pop music entitled A Cappella (mostly). The concert will include show and folk tunes, as well as traditional a cappella favorites. Chorus rehearsals this spring will be held in White Hall at MCPHS on Monday nights at 7:00 p.m.

Visit www.colleges-fenway.org/performingarts for more information about all of the ensembles.

Meet the GEO Center Global Ambassadors

The Global Ambassador program is now in it's 2nd year at the Colleges of the Fenway Global Education Opportunities (GEO) Center. Interest and enthusiasm are beginning to grow. Briefly, the Global Ambassadors are COF students who have returned from studying abroad on a travel course, semester or year-long program and were so moved by their experience that they want to share their stories and travel skills with the rest of the COF community. They conduct information sessions for COF students about study abroad opportunities, organize Travel Talk Tables in the cafeterias, work at COF study abroad fairs, and do other activities to encourage students to travel the world. They have a wealth of knowledge about how to choose the right program, the best places to go in their study abroad country, safe travel tips, and even how to get along eating certain foods abroad. Listed below are some of this year's global ambassadors including their bio and contact information. Feel free to contact them with questions about your own travel explorations - that's what they're here for!!

If you are interested in keeping your study abroad experience alive, contact Atina White at awhite@colleges-fenway.org for more information about how to join the GEO Center's global
ambassador team.

Kelly Dashner, Mass College of Art and Design, Junior
Travel Course in Egypt ~ kelly.dashner@massart.edu
I'm currently pursuing my BFA in Illustration at Mass. College of Art + Design. I plan to pursue work in archaeological illustration or a related field, which is why I chose to study in Egypt for two weeks last semester. As it was my first international experience, I learned a lot about myself and the world (both good and bad) and that is why I wanted to become a global ambassador- so other students would get a real, unbiased view of what the experience was like and how it affected me after I got back.

Lauren Zanotti, Emmanuel College, Senior
Semester in Galway , Ireland ~ zanottla@emmanuel.edu
I am majoring is Counseling and Health Psychology with a minor in Sociology. I studied in Galway , Ireland at the National University of Ireland, Galway in the fall of 2006. I chose to become a Global Ambassadors because it is a way for me to show my love for studying abroad by helping fellow students consider enhancing their education by doing a study abroad program. I hope that as a Global Ambassador, I am able to encourage other students to have their own experience abroad.

Cecelia Auditore, Emmanuel College, Senior
Semester in Florence , Italy ~ auditoce@emmanuel.edu
I’m majoring in History with a minor in Political Science. I recently studied abroad in Florence , Italy and had an amazing experience. I chose to become a Global Ambassador in order to help those who are seeking to study abroad as well. The process of studying abroad and finding the correct program can be tiring and I would like to lend my personal experiences with others who are considering studying abroad.

Leah Maroni-Wagner, Simmons College, Senior
Year in Granada , Spain ~ maroni@simmons.edu
¡Hola! I am a Spanish and Econ major, and I am returning after spending my junior year studying in the beautiful city of Granada , Spain . Coming back from such a wonderful and rewarding experience, as a Global Ambassador I want to communicate to the college community that studying abroad is an amazing and beneficial experience both personally and academically, and can greatly impact your life even if it does not directly relate to your chosen college major.

Rana Alsweilem, Simmons College, Senior
Travel Course in Dubai , United Arab Emirates ~ rana.alsweilem@simmons.edu
I am majoring in Public Relations/Marketing Communications with a minor in Management. Last spring, I enrolled in a multicultural women’s leadership management course that traveled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates . I chose to be a Global Ambassador because ever since I was a little girl, I have always found myself in a new and completely different country; and I grew up loving international travel and all the experiences that came along with it. And as my family made us travel very frequently, my interest in globalization only increased with each year that passed and one of my dreams was to study abroad. My dream became reality when I transferred from my home country, Saudi Arabia , to Simmons College in the United States . But soon after the first semester, I just couldn’t help but feel the mix of desire and excitement again to try another new place and so I decided to go to Dubai . I feel that with all the enthusiasm I have towards global education and study abroad opportunities, my experiences of studying abroad, as well as coming from a global and multicultural background myself, I will be able to successfully fulfill the position of a Global Ambassador for the GEO Center and give all the excited prospective study abroad students the encouragement they need as well feedback and answers to their questions and concerns.

Maha Alsweilem, Simmons College, Junior
Travel Course in Dubai , United Arab Emirates ~ maha.alsweilem@simmons.edu
I’m majoring in Public Relations\Marketing Communication with a minor in Finance. I returned last summer from a management travel course to Dubai , UAE where we studied women’s leadership. Our travel course was one of a kind because our class was divided into two sections; one traveling to Dubai, UAE and the other to India comparing women leaders in the two countries. I am excited to be a Global Ambassador because I love traveling and love discovering new cultures that widens one’s mind. So, by being a global ambassador I’ll get the chance to excite other students to experience new things and hopefully learn life lessons with long lasting memories. In addition to traveling with Simmons College , I’ve traveled to more than 100 cities around the world within 16 countries. I believe that my travel experiences have shaped my personality helping me to be open to all kinds of beliefs and ideologies which I believe is an important quality in one’s personality.

Nicole Becker, Emmanuel College, Senior
Semester in Rome , Italy ~ beckerni@emmanuel.edu
I studied abroad for fall semester of 2006 in Rome , Italy . It was the best four months of my life, especially considering I didn't even want to study abroad in the first place (my Mom wanted me to). I learned so much while I was abroad, about Italian culture and European culture in general since I traveled a lot. My roommates in Italy have become my best friends and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

Jessica Robinson, Mass College of Art and Design, Sophomore
Travel Course in Japan ~ jessica.robinson@massart.edu
I’m double majoring in Art Education and Printmaking. I was attracted to the global ambassador program because I have a strong passion for International relations and travel. I spent a month living with a host family in Tokyo , Japan last summer. I have hosted several exchange students, worked with SHOWA Boston as a CCP, and I currently work in the International Education Office at MassArt. Next year I will be working as an exchange coordinator and mentor with LEX Language Exchange Program in Japan for a year (2008-2009).I hope that working as a Global Ambassador will prepare me for this upcoming travel and work experience. A fun fact about Japan : The Japanese do not bury their telephone, power or cable wires. They are all above ground, which, when combined with the crowdedness of the houses, gives Tokyo the feeling of a spider web.

Thao Ngoc Do, Mass College of Art and Design, Junior
Travel Course in Vietnam ~ thao.do@massart.edu
I lived in Vietnam for 20 years before I came to the US . I currently live with my family in Dedham . I study Architecture and I love to travel because it does not only give me inspirations from the architectural aspect but also enrich my knowledge about different cultures. Through traveling, I realized the impact that cultures have made on us. Therefore, I want to advocate traveling abroad as a way for people to gain their experiences in the fastest way and open their minds to tremendous proportions. My goal before I reach thirty is to travel to at least 10 countries. I have been to two already. The main tip I have for you is: If you think about it, then it can be done. Life is short so don’t hesitate to pursue your dreams and goals.

Mandy Ozols, Simmons College, Senior
Semester in Dublin , Ireland ~ ozols@simmons.edu
I am double majoring in Political Science and Public Relations.  Last fall I lived in Dublin , Ireland and interned with the Irish Parliament.  It was the greatest experience of my life.  I traveled to other European countries and also took a road trip across Ireland.  The people I met abroad and the times I shared with them was life changing. I think everyone should study abroad. Cheers!

COF Hosts 6th Annual Teaching and Learning Conference

Over 80 faculty members from the Colleges of the Fenway attended the 6th annual COF Teaching and Learning Conference on Thursday and Friday, October 25 and 26, 2007.  Entitled “Digital Immigrants/Digital Natives: Teaching and Learning in an Age of Technology,” the conference focused on teaching students who have been educated in an age of technology, by instructors from whom technology is a new medium. Different teaching methods and disciplines were taught to faculty, by faculty, covering all forms of classroom technology including VoIP, wikis, blogs and classroom response systems, to name a few.

This year’s conference took place over the course of two days, beginning with keynote Stone Wiske, lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, who opened the conference Thursday evening in White Hall at MCPHS. She reflected on her own research and experience, including recommendations for technology faculty can use to enhance the experiences in the classroom. She published the book “Teaching for Understanding with Technology,” which was available for purchase during the conference. The second day of the conference, held at Wheelock's Brookline Campus, began with a student panel entitled “Digital Myths, Digital Realities: Technology Practices in Students’ Lives.” Students presented on some common misperceptions professors might have about the valuable role new media, such as Facebook, plays in students’ intellectual and social lives. Faculty members were able to discuss with the students first hand notions they may hold about the role of technology. Soon after, keynote Erin B. Reilly, research manager of the new media literacies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, spoke to the faculty about co-founding Platform Shoes Forum, a non-profit organization that researches and develops online educational programs and e-learning environments for youth. One of the programs she developed was Zoey’s Room, a national online community for 10-14 year old girls, encouraging their creativities through science, technology, engineering and math.

Participants were then given the opportunity to select from a number of breakout sessions lead by COF faculty members. There were a total of 13 sessions held by faculty members, including a presentation by Rodica Neamtu from Emmanuel titled Appealing to the Digital Natives: Multimedia, Voice over IP and e-Portfolios in the Classroom; a presentation by Fran Rogers and Matt Silva from MCPHS titled Classroom Response Systems: Lessons Learned and Pitfalls to Avoid; a presentation by Monique Fuchs from WIT titled Sustainable Management of Educational Innovations: A Programmatic Approach; and a presentation by Karen Teeley from Simmons titled On the Threshold: Teaching Across Two Generations. Another component to the conference was the vendor fair held through out the second day. Materials and representatives were available from a handful of classroom technology companies, some of which already work with the individual schools, to answer questions and provide information to the faculty about their products and services. The vendors represented were: Agilix, Inc., Elluminate, Inc., Respondus, Inc., Software Secure, and Turning Technologies, LLC.

"The content of the COF Teaching and Learning Conference was enlightening, particularly the student panel comments. I especially enjoyed working with other COF faculty. Teaching methods are not specific to one discipline. They cross boundaries." - Beth Welch, MCPHS, both a faculty presenter at the conference and a conference committee member

This year’s conference was planned by a committee of representatives from each of the colleges including Gouri Banerjee, Lisa Falvey, Emmanuel College; Kate MacDonald, Beth Welch, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; Bruce Tis, Simmons College; Christopher Gleason, Wentworth Institute of Technology; Cassandra Giarrusso, Lauren Hendriks, Claire Ramsbottom, Colleges of the Fenway.

Welcome Jennifer Willingham to Colleges of the Fenway

pic12 Jennifer Willingham joined the COF staff in October in 2007 as Vista Support Specialist. She works for Colleges of The Fenway and Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She is very excited about coordinating efforts and conducting training on the Blackboard (formally WebCT) Vista course management system for the Colleges of the Fenway. She has been working with Blackboard (formally WebCT) course management system since 2001. She believes that this is an especially opportune time to support the use of Blackboard Vista course management system, as there are new features and improvements that are part of the new version released in January 2008. She was most recently employed by Texas A&M University of Galveston as the Faculty Support for Technology. In this role, Jennifer supported Blackboard, videoconferencing, training, audio visual, video editing, special projects, classroom furnishing, and technical grants. Prior to that, she worked at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in various IT related jobs and for the Center for Telehealth and Distance Education where she was a grant project coordinator. She has served on several conference planning committees in Texas including WebCT Texas  from 2004-2007. She was a volunteer for D’Feet Breast Cancer, Inc. and The Galveston Community Network non profit organizations. Her personal interests include windsurfing, painting, and string bass.

Colleges of the Fenway Hosts a Social for Faculty and Staff

Each fall Colleges of the Fenway runs a series of welcome socials for students, faculty and staff on the campuses.  With several new restaurants opening in the local area in the past year, COF ventured off campus to look for a new forum for facilitating the connection building process that facilitates collaboration.  On September 20th, Colleges of the Fenway hosted a Faculty/Staff Social at the recently opened Cambridge 1. Kicking off the academic year, the event provided an opportunity to showcase a new eatery in the Fenway.  Seventy faculty and staff members from the colleges came together to sample Cambridge 1's pizza and make connections with each other. Members of the Human Resources Committee, who helped promote the event, were very pleased with the response. Cambridge 1's management was very easy to work with in the planning process.  Colleges of the Fenway will be looking for additional opportunities to continue these types of events each semester; bringing together the faculty and staff from the colleges and supporting local businesses.
