2nd Annual Turkey Trot a Huge Success On November 17th, 2007, over 115 students, faculty, and staff took to Clemente Park to participate in the 2nd Annual Colleges of the Fenway Turkey Trot. The 5K Fun Run/Walk co-hosted by COF Intramurals, MCPHS Recreation and Wellness and a section of MCPHS’ First Year Seminar Community Service class, raised over 850 pounds of food for the Greater Boston Food Bank. The event was co-sponsored by Office Max, Cambridge 1, and O Water. After the event, participants and volunteers gathered at Cambridge 1, a local new restaurant in the Fenway area, for food, beverages and socializing. The event was originally scheduled for November 3rd, however Hurricane Noel hit the East Coast and caused the event to be postponed by two weeks. Over 190 people originally signed up for the event, more than double the amount of entrants from 2006. Meet the GEO Center Global Ambassadors The Global Ambassador program is now in it's 2nd year at the Colleges of the Fenway Global Education Opportunities (GEO) Center. Interest and enthusiasm are beginning to grow. Briefly, the Global Ambassadors are COF students who have returned from studying abroad on a travel course, semester or year-long program and were so moved by their experience that they want to share their stories and travel skills with the rest of the COF community. They conduct information sessions for COF students about study abroad opportunities, organize Travel Talk Tables in the cafeterias, work at COF study abroad fairs, and do other activities to encourage students to travel the world. They have a wealth of knowledge about how to choose the right program, the best places to go in their study abroad country, safe travel tips, and even how to get along eating certain foods abroad. Listed below are some of this year's global ambassadors including their bio and contact information. Feel free to contact them with questions about your own travel explorations - that's what they're here for!! If you are interested in keeping your study abroad experience alive, contact Atina White at awhite@colleges-fenway.org for more information about how to join the GEO Center's global

COF Hosts 6th Annual Teaching and Learning Conference Over 80 faculty members from the Colleges of the Fenway attended the 6th annual COF Teaching and Learning Conference on Thursday and Friday, October 25 and 26, 2007. Entitled “Digital Immigrants/Digital Natives: Teaching and Learning in an Age of Technology,” the conference focused on teaching students who have been educated in an age of technology, by instructors from whom technology is a new medium. Different teaching methods and disciplines were taught to faculty, by faculty, covering all forms of classroom technology including VoIP, wikis, blogs and classroom response systems, to name a few. This year’s conference took place over the course of two days, beginning with keynote Stone Wiske, lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, who opened the conference Thursday evening in White Hall at MCPHS. She reflected on her own research and experience, including recommendations for technology faculty can use to enhance the experiences in the classroom. She published the book “Teaching for Understanding with Technology,” which was available for purchase during the conference. The second day of the conference, held at Wheelock's Brookline Campus, began with a student panel entitled “Digital Myths, Digital Realities: Technology Practices in Students’ Lives.” Students presented on some common misperceptions professors might have about the valuable role new media, such as Facebook, plays in students’ intellectual and social lives. Faculty members were able to discuss with the students first hand notions they may hold about the role of technology. Soon after, keynote Erin B. Reilly, research manager of the new media literacies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, spoke to the faculty about co-founding Platform Shoes Forum, a non-profit organization that researches and develops online educational programs and e-learning environments for youth. One of the programs she developed was Zoey’s Room, a national online community for 10-14 year old girls, encouraging their creativities through science, technology, engineering and math. Participants were then given the opportunity to select from a number of breakout sessions lead by COF faculty members. There were a total of 13 sessions held by faculty members, including a presentation by Rodica Neamtu from Emmanuel titled Appealing to the Digital Natives: Multimedia, Voice over IP and e-Portfolios in the Classroom; a presentation by Fran Rogers and Matt Silva from MCPHS titled Classroom Response Systems: Lessons Learned and Pitfalls to Avoid; a presentation by Monique Fuchs from WIT titled Sustainable Management of Educational Innovations: A Programmatic Approach; and a presentation by Karen Teeley from Simmons titled On the Threshold: Teaching Across Two Generations. Another component to the conference was the vendor fair held through out the second day. Materials and representatives were available from a handful of classroom technology companies, some of which already work with the individual schools, to answer questions and provide information to the faculty about their products and services. The vendors represented were: Agilix, Inc., Elluminate, Inc., Respondus, Inc., Software Secure, and Turning Technologies, LLC. "The content of the COF Teaching and Learning Conference was enlightening, particularly the student panel comments. I especially enjoyed working with other COF faculty. Teaching methods are not specific to one discipline. They cross boundaries." - Beth Welch, MCPHS, both a faculty presenter at the conference and a conference committee member This year’s conference was planned by a committee of representatives from each of the colleges including Gouri Banerjee, Lisa Falvey, Emmanuel College; Kate MacDonald, Beth Welch, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; Bruce Tis, Simmons College; Christopher Gleason, Wentworth Institute of Technology; Cassandra Giarrusso, Lauren Hendriks, Claire Ramsbottom, Colleges of the Fenway.

Colleges of the Fenway Hosts a Social for Faculty and Staff Each fall Colleges of the Fenway runs a series of welcome socials for students, faculty and staff on the campuses. With several new restaurants opening in the local area in the past year, COF ventured off campus to look for a new forum for facilitating the connection building process that facilitates collaboration. On September 20th, Colleges of the Fenway hosted a Faculty/Staff Social at the recently opened Cambridge 1. Kicking off the academic year, the event provided an opportunity to showcase a new eatery in the Fenway. Seventy faculty and staff members from the colleges came together to sample Cambridge 1's pizza and make connections with each other. Members of the Human Resources Committee, who helped promote the event, were very pleased with the response. Cambridge 1's management was very easy to work with in the planning process. Colleges of the Fenway will be looking for additional opportunities to continue these types of events each semester; bringing together the faculty and staff from the colleges and supporting local businesses.
