COF Welcomes New Director of Environmental Health & Safety

Please join us in welcoming Mike Malmberg, the new Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). Mike started on June 20th and works with three of our member colleges:  Emmanuel College, Simmons University and Wentworth Institute of Technology.  He is responsible for all required EH&S programs on each campus and is looking forward to identifying opportunities where the colleges can collaborate to enhance services and manage costs.  While a shared position already achieves savings it also provides perspective to streamline and identify common needs for areas such as training, vendor selection, engaging or minimizing the amount of consulting services required and other synergies that benefit these participating colleges.

Mike is a graduate of Roger Williams University. Prior to joining Colleges of the Fenway, Mike was a Senior Safety Specialist at Boston University’s National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories. Mike has extensive experience in chemical and biological safety, including over 150 hours in a biosafety level 4 laboratory where the Ebola Virus is studied.  Part of his role was to assess personal exposures within laboratories, as well as occupational hazards throughout the campus. Mike also has a broad knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements from his experience as a consultant with Clean Harbors Environmental Services for biotech, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, and other institutes of higher education.

In his spare time, Mike can be found with his fiancé and two dogs at local parks, out shopping, or at area events. Mike and his fiancé are getting married in New Hampshire next spring and are looking forward to starting a family.
