What is the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program?

The CERT program trains participants on basic emergency response processes, including personal preparedness, fire safety, and basic first aid. CERT volunteers may be called upon by their host institution to engage during an emergency activation or to prepare for an event. Members are required to attend a two-day training course at COF or Northeastern. There are no additional requirements for further participation unless you volunteer. You chose your involvement level!

Students from the COF and Northeastern are all welcome to join CERT. Staff and faculty will have their own CERT program.

Why Join?

  • Credentials – The CERT certification is a national accreditation that can be used for local, state and corporately run CERT programs across the country.
  • Preparedness – Members are prepared for emergency response activities, including fire safety, basic first aid, and severe weather preparedness.
  • Career Building – Boost career prospects and future opportunities in a growing field of emergency management and public health. The CERT certificate will give you a competitive advantage.
  • Community – Meet members that include students, staff, and faculty of the COF and Northeastern. Instructors will be members of COF, Northeastern, Boston EMT / Fire / Police.

What Do Participants Learn?

There are 8 CERT units that are required for accreditation:

  • Unit 1 – Disaster Preparedness
  • Unit 2 – CERT Organization
  • Unit 3 – Disaster Medical Operations Part 1
  • Unit 4 – Disaster Medical Operations Part 2
  • Unit 5 – Disaster Psychology
  • Unit 6 – Fire Safety & Utility Controls
